MARTIN BICKNELL
Right-arm fast medium bowler, RHB.
Martin Bicknell set a trend when he made his first-class debut for Surrey in 1986 at the age of 17, the first of 10 Guildford players to make the leap over the next 18 years.
In that time he has become not only one of the most distinguished swing bowlers in the English game but elevated his batting to all-rounder status.
An Ashes tourist in 1990-91, he played two Tests for England in 1993 but then had to wait another 10 years before his belated return against South Africa in 2003, helping to square the series at The Oval.
His finest moment in county cricket came at Guildford in 2000 when he took 16 wickets in the match against Leicestershire.
Martin now works as Master in charge of cricket at Charterhouse School and made valuable contributions for Guildford in the Flora Doris Cup last year.

JADE DERNBACH
Right-arm fast bowler, right hand bat
Jade Dernbach is one of Surrey CCC's leading fast bowlers and was the fifth youngest-ever to make his first-class debut for the county, beating Martin Bicknell by 10 days.
Jade has been a fully contracted professional for Surrey CCC for three seasons and has established himself as a 1st XI regular.
He was one of the few bright sparks in Surrey's 2008 season, highlighted by his first-class best of 6/72 against Somerset at Whitgift School ended with Jade being selected for the ECB Elite Fast Bowler Development Programme.

ANDY HOLLINGSWORTH
Right hand bat, right arm medium bowler
Andy has been an established premier division performer for a number of years. He amassed a massive 882 runs in the 2003 Surrey Championship season including his epic 175no which led the way to an extraordinary victory over Malden Wanderers.
Andy made his first-class debut for Durham University in 2002 and the following season played regularly for Surrey 2nd XI, hitting a century against Lancashire.
|
TARIQUE KALAM
Right-arm fast medium bowler, right hand bat
Having been in the junior section at Woodbridge Road, Tarique hit prominence in 2003 when he took 5-25 against Normandy in the Surrey Championship Premier Division, the best performance by a 16-year-old since Martin Bicknell.
He was included in the inaugural intake of the Surrey Academy and then spent three years at Oxford Brookes, where he made the UCCE side for all three years and made nine first-class appearances.
Tarique's strokeplay and seam bowling are augmented by a first-rate pair of hands. All three were in evidence in helping Guildford reach the final of the Surrey Trust League in 2008. He is spending the winter playing in Cape Town.

ROSS SKIDMORE
First XI Captain
Right hand bat
A serious knee injury restricted Ross Skidmore's Guildford return to no more than a handful of games in 2008.
His rumbustious batting at the top of the order was much missed and it is hoped that an operation on his right knee will enable him to play a full role next season.
Ross followed older brother Dean into the first team in 1991 and at one stage ran the club bar. He had a three-year break from cricket while working in Brighton, where he researched other leisure activities, but returned in 2000 and played his part in winning the league title the following season.
Captain in 2003 - a role he did not enjoy even though the side finished fourth - he spent a season at Normandy in 2007 but returned and hopes to play a part in helping Guildford back up the Premier Division.

ED YOUNG
Slow left arm, right hand bat
Ed is a gifted left-arm spinner and accomplished batsman with a fine pair of hands. His bowling developed well during the 2008 season after working on getting higher in his action while a valiant 98 against Wimbledon almost saved what had seemed a certain defeat, while he was the only batsman to look remotely comfortable on either side in the vital late-season victory at Dulwich.
Ed, who jointly captained Valley End to the National Village Cup at Lord's in September, has just started a degree course at Oxford Brookes University and should benefit greatly from the input of coach Graham Charlesworth.
|
ROB JONES
Right hand bat, right arm medium
Rob joined the club aged 15 with his brother Ed in 2001 and progressed through the ranks to establish himself in the first team in 2007.
An 81 against Wimbledon and a 75 against Sutton the following week were clear demonstrations of Rob's talent and temperament. A top-order stroke-player, Rob enjoys quick bowling and plays shots around the wicket.
Having captained the Cranleigh School First XI and played at Leeds University, Rob is also a regular participant in the Guildford Academy XI. He has developed a steady right-arm medium suited to the limited overs format.
After a season interrupted by injuries, Rob will be hoping to assert himself on the Premier Division in 2009. He mixes his cricket with full-time law studies at the College of law, Guildford.

CHRIS COOMBS
Sunday Academy Vice-Captain
Son of former Somerset spinner RVJ Coombs, Chris joined the club in 2008, re-locating to the area as a Business student at the University of Surrey.
Chris proved to be a major addition to the club - his canny off-spin and middle order acumination of runs earning him the esteemed 2nd XI player of the year award last season.
On his 1st XI debut away to league runners-up Malden Wanders, Chris bowled Surrey professional Stewart Walters and in the Sunday Academy XI he topped the league bowling averages.
Chris learnt his trade playing for Bournemouth CC making his way up through the ranks over ten years, achieving County and Regional honours as a youth on the way.
Chris will hope his promising start at the club continues as he pushes for further 1st XI honours in 2009.

BRETT HOSKING
Sunday Academy XI Captain
Right hand bat
Born and raised in Durban, South Africa Brett is now an established club member having spent the last 5 years in the town since emigrating here and has been a member of Guildford CC for that time.
Reading law at the University of Surrey he also captained the University 1st XI. He now works at Clyde & Co in Guildford.
Brett has played for the 2nd and 3rd XIs as a compact middle order batsman. Captain of the Sunday Academy side Brett led the team to the final of the Surrey Trust League in 2008.
Other highlights include his First 50 for the 2nd XI in 2007 and his maiden 100 in a Sunday game in 2008. He has also acquired the UKCC 1 Coaching Certificate taking part in the ECB's 'Chance to Shine' programme on behalf of the club in 2008 in local schools.

THOMAS TREMEWAN
Right hand bat, right arm medium
Thomas was born in South Africa and raised in Limpopo Province.
He started developing his cricket with the Limpopo Province Cricket Academy in Polokwane.
He emigrated to the UK in 2003, at the age of 13, where he played colts cricket locally before joining Guildford Cricket Club in 2008.
In his first season, Thomas played for 1st XI, 2nd XI and Surrey Trust league and was part of the squad that won the Admiral Dunlop cup in 2008. Thomas enjoys the role of all-rounder, batting in the middle order and bowling fast medium. A highlight last season was his 109 against Dulwich for the Sunday Academy team. Tom also showcased his fantastic throwing arm with four key run-outs in 2008.
Tom recently worked towards a UKCC 2 Coaching Certificate, and is currently coaching the Guildford Cricket Club colts as well as Parkside Cricket Academy in Cobham.

CARMAN MAPATUNA
Right hand bat, leg spin bowler
Carman Mapatuna joined Guildford as the club's overseas professional from Sri Lanka in 2001. In his first season, Carman’s flamboyant batting, leg-spin bowling and sharp fielding proved a major contribution in helping Guildford win the Surrey Championship.
More recently, Carman has helped carry a talented but developing side, and in 2007 almost single-handedly earned Guildford an unlikely final-day escape from relegation with 5 wickets and 93 runs against champions Reigate Priory.
Returning to Guildford in 2009 for a ninth season, Carman will be hoping to build on the team’s improved performances last year and help Guildford challenge for another Surrey Championship title.
In all, Carman has scored in excess of 4,500 league runs and taken almost 250 wickets, sometimes trading in his leg-breaks for nagging seamers when the conditions have suited.
Elsewhere, Carman has played a great deal of first class cricket in his native Sri Lanka and has spent a number of winters playing in Australia.
Off the field, Carman has recently completed his ECB level two coaching qualification and can often be found coaching the Club’s juniors, as well as helping out in the beer tent during Guildford’s annual festival.

CHRIS SCHOFIELD
Leg spin bowler, right hand bat
Chris, 31, made his England test debut in 2000 aged 22. A promising leg-spinner, his two tests included a handy 57 against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge.
Following many years at Lancashire, Chris joined Surrey in 2006 and began to show his class in the Twenty20 format. He finished the 2006 campaign as the leading domestic Twenty20 wicket-taker. This prompted an England recall and Chris was selected in the squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in 2007.
He played in four of England's matches taking 2 for 15 to help England beat Zimbabwe in the group stages.
Chris's leg-spin craft and unorthodox talent with the bat are set to be a major addition to Guildford this year.
|
DEAN SKIDMORE
Right hand bat, right arm medium bowler
It is 20 years since Dean first broke into Guildford's first team, first as a cautious opener and then as a powerful strokemaker with a flair for closing down a run chase.
Vice-captain to three skippers, he played big roles in escaping the drop in 1999 and winning the Surrey Championship Premier Division two years later.
Dean stepped down from first team cricket in 2004, spending that summer developing his wily medium-paced bowling in the seconds. If his absence was a factor in relegation, so his return was equally so in bouncing back. Wanting to spend more time with his family, he retired at the end of the 2006 season but the bug remains and it was no surprise in 2008 when - available for half the matches - he topped both the batting and bowling averages.
|
TIM WALTER Right hand bat
Mr Guildford. Tim started playing for Guildford in the dog days of the early 1980s when the club regularly finished bottom of the old Surrey Championship first division. There was no relegation in those days but in the first year it was possible he ensured the club avoided it in the best way - by captaining them to the title.
He continues to accrue large numbers of runs, mainly now in the second team, with a big front pad thrust firmly in behind (and sometimes ahead) of bat. There is no doubt that Tim's leadership in three spells has impacted on his own game but his drive for success and ability to mould a team have been invaluable in ensuring Guildford have been an almost constant presence in the top division of Surrey club cricket.
His first spell as captain ran from 1986 to 1991, returning in 2000 and leading the side to the Premier title the following summer plus runners-up spot 12 months later. Recalled after Guildford slipped down a level in 2004, he was in charge as the Division One was claimed in 2005 plus third place in the Premier in 2006. Perhaps the most remarkable achievement was in pulling together a weak and inexperienced team from the brink of another relegation in 2007.
Tim is now Club Captain and chairman of the club's cricket committee, working as hard off the field as he has always done on it.
|
TOM JEWELL
Right-arm fast medium bowler, right hand bat
Tom Jewell became Surrey's third youngest player ever when he made his first-class debut against Loughborough UCCE at The Oval in April 2008.
But his performances for Guildford were far more mature than might have been expected of a 17-year-old. If his batting occasionally betrayed inexperience, Tom's seam bowling proved crucial in several tight situations and the way he battled through a painful hip injury in the closing weeks of the season were encouraging to those who believe the all-rounder will go far in the game.
|
ED JONES
Second XI Vice-Captain
Right hand bat, off spin bowler
Ed joined Guildford aged 17 in 2001 while a pupil at the Royal Grammar School. He has played in every team, currently serving as Vice Captain of the 2nd XI and on the club's committee.
A top order batsman, Ed has made a number of hundreds for the club, playing some key innings in successful second XI campaigns. He was part of the side that finished second in the Premier Division in 2004.
Ed also bowls accurate off-spin, specialising in the limited overs format, where he took wickets in the Admiral Dunlop final win over Normandy in 2008.
During the week, Ed works as a lobbyist and political consultant for the England & Wales Cricket Board.
|
SCOTT O'BRIEN
Left arm medium
Scott is from Melbourne, Australia and 2009 will be his second season at Guildford CC.
After arriving in England 5 years ago and having not played for 10 years he spent 2 seasons playing for Isambard CC in Sunday friendlies around London.
Highlights at Isambard were taking a club record 6 for 23 and breaking his collarbone fielding on debut.
Wearing the Baggy Green in earnest has probably now passed him by so he plans to cement his place in the 3's this year as opening/first change seamer. He also fancies himself with the bat more than the stats suggest he should.
|
LUKE TILLBROOK
Second XI Captain
Right hand bat
Luke joined the club in 2007 having not played the game since he was 18.
Originally from Devon, Luke soon settled in the Surrey Championship, showing his quality in the third team before going on to appear in the second and first elevens. He then made a powewrful 114 against Old Whitgiftians and took over the second team captaincy the following season.
He captained the seconds to fourth place in the 2008 season, narrowly missing out on promotion on the final day of the campaign.
Luke has finished the last two seasons with over 700 runs to his name, including some powerful innings in the Academy and Twenty20 competitions and some match-winning performances as second XI captain.
|
PHIL NICHOLLS
Right arm fast-medium
Phil Nicholls moved to Guildford in 2006 after four years studying at the University of Nottingham. He joined Guildford CC at the end of the 2007 and made an instant impact by taking 5 wickets on his 3rd XI league debut.
A medium pace swing bowler, Phil, 24, now regularly opens the bowling for the 2nd XI, and lists his most memorable performances as taking 6 wickets away against Esher, and surviving almost 20 overs as last man in the 1st XI home fixture against Wimbledon.
The leading wicket taker for the 2nd XI last year, Phil’s cricketing ambitions are to score a league 50, and remain the club's most enthusiastic and dedicated statistician. Phil also contributes as the club's Teams Secretary.
|
CHAD MURRIN A former 1st XI leg spinner, Chad Murrin now enjoys life as an opening batter for the 3rd XI. Strong off his legs and brutal on the pull, Chad has been the 3s leading run scorer for the past 3 seasons.
With the 3rd XI benefiting from a significantly stronger squad in 2009, Chad has kindly allowed younger batsman an opportunity to play match-winning innings as the team tops the table.
Chad was educated at Blundell's School and Oxford before qualifying as a barrister and enjoying a long career in the city. A devout Somerset supporter, Chad regularly returns to his roots to support the Cidermen and run the old boys' fixtures.
Having previously been Guildford CC Chairman, Chad remains heavily involved in the Club’s administration and currently acts as fixture secretary and commercial manager.
