History
In its present guise GLCC has been in existence since the beginning of the 2002 season. Prior to that we were known as Waverley Ladies’ – formed under the aegis of Waverley Council as part of their sports development programme. Through one of our founder members we became affiliated to Bramley Cricket Club and thus found that our home ground was where the first women’s match was played back in the 18th century.
We achieved a fair amount of success during our early years and joined a Surrey development league in 1998. After being placed 3rd in the first year we went on to win it in 1999 and 2000.
In 2001 our new coach, Mark Speers, suggested we might benefit from a change of scene and consider joining Guildford Cricket Club as they were keen to develop a women’s team. After much discussion the membership agreed that this would be a positive move and we bade Bramley a fond farewell.
Our first season as part of Guildford saw us play a small number of friendly matches - with mixed success, although we won our final four games.
In 2003 we came third in the National League (Div3 South) and athough enjoying much success in 2004 we narrowly missed out on promotion. In 2005 we found that Div 3 had expanded and promised us much in the way of both testing cricket and travel and we finished in fourth place behind Horsham.
After a disappointing start to the 2006 season, a very strong finish resulted in Guildford Ladies finishing fifth in South Division 3. 2007 saw Guildford finish second in Division 3, earning promotion to Division 2.
